UF Project GO Turkey

A fully funded summer study abroad program in Ankara, Turkey for ROTC students

Requirements for eligibility:

  • must be an active ROTC student at any American college or university
  • commission date must be after the summer abroad program is completed
  • must have taken at least two semesters of beginning Turkish OR be a Turkish heritage speaker (1 or more parents speak Turkish fluently and the student is somewhat familiar with the language)

Application Due Date: March 1st, 2017

Program Dates: May 8th through June 30th, 2017 (8 full weeks)

Structure of Project GO Full-Year Program

Beginning Turkish I and II with Sema Karagoz

Offered in one of two formats:

Traditional Academic Year Beginning Turkish I and II

A Spring semester and Fall semester 5-credit course (total: 10 credits)

ROTC Beginning Turkish I and II

An adjusted 3-credit Spring semester and Fall semester course (total: 6 credits)

Plus additional tutoring

Note: academic year is currently unfunded

Ankara Summer Program

Note: students must test out of beginning Turkish I and II in order to attend the summer abroad trip.

8-week, 11-credit Summer Abroad Language and Area Studies Program

5 credits of Intermediate Turkish language equivalent to Intermediate Turkish I and II

Taught by Sema Karagoz

6 credits of Turkish area studies that can be counted towards History and/or European Studies

Turkish Islamic Culture (3 credits)

– Taught by Dr. Emrah Sahin in English

– About the transformation of Turkish and Islamic culture through the past. Particular topics include: a) Turkish encounters with Islam and the Ottoman legacy; b) Intellectual and mystic movements; and c) Secularism and conservative politics.

Ottoman and Turkish Politics (3 credits)

– Taught by Dr. Emrah Sahin in English

– Brief historical overview from the Ottoman Empire to the early 20th Century followed by a close exploration of the transformation of the Turkish Republic in 1923 and the Modern Turkish state

The University of Economics and Technology (ETU) is the host institution for the full 8-weeks

Students will live on campus in ETU dorms

Scholarship includes an on-campus meal plan for the duration of the program

Funding Details:

The scholarship covers:

  • tuition
  • housing
  • meals
  • airfare
  • class materials
  • travel health insurance

The scholarship does NOT cover:

  • personal spending money
  • personal travel
  • inoculations
  • credit transfer fees

  • PDF copy of unofficial UF transcript
  • Two recommendations using letter of recommendation template
    • Detachment commander
    • Professor or graduate student instructor

Students are eligible to apply for a second funded summer after their first Project GO scholarship
